SEOUL – The South Korean romantic comedy Be My Pet has sold to nine Asian regions including Japan and China, its local co-distributors KJ-net and Lotte Entertainment said Thursday.

The film, based on a Japanese comic series and directed by Kim Byeong-gon, is slated to show on more than 100 screens in Japan beginning on Jan. 21, 2012 via Toho Co., before getting a wide release in China between February and March. It is also set to be screened in Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.

“Not many Korean films have been seen in Japanese theaters of late and we hope the wide release will encourage more local titles to show in Japan. It is also rare for Korean movies to be shown in China, but the star power of the lead actors, who are well known in Asian countries through TV dramas and movies, seem to have helped the process,” said the film’s PR firm &Credit.
Be My Pet stars Jang Geun-suk, one of the most highly paid and sought-after Korean actor-singers in Japan. He is also known to have a sizeable fan base in China.

Jang plays the role of a choreographer who, desperate for a place to live, agrees to become a “pet” for a single woman in her 30s, who, demoted at work and dumped by a beau, desperately misses the comfort of her late dog. Kim Ha-neul, who recently won the Best Actress Award at the Blue Dragon Awards for portraying a visually impaired woman in Blind, co-stars in the film. Her previous spy comedy My Girlfriend Is an Agent also did well in Chinese theaters.

Be My Pet opened in Korean theaters since Nov. 10 and the movie attracted 523,000 in admissions.
